“I decided to make painting my life.” This film connects the component moments of a life to the lines of force of a body of work. These links permit us to discover an interior world and to render the presence of a painting. The painter relates the formative acts and the essential encounters of his life. His love of wide spaces, his desire to broaden established cultural boundaries, are linked to the “urgent necessity” of painting. “I don't know what I am looking for. It is what I create that teaches me what I'm looking for.”

Jean-Noël Cristiani

Since Le Silence des organes (1974), Cristiani has directed more than twenty films, essentially documentaries, many dedicated to art and artists. Among these, several films about jazz (Count Basie, 1995, John Coltrane, 1996, Max Roach, 1997) or writers (Edouard Glissant, 1994, Karen Blixen, 1995, Mika Waltari, 1997). Soulages, le noir et la lumière is the fourth film he devoted to the painter. He also participated in the creation of the Ateliers Varan, and then created the Atelier Varan in Nairobi in 1982 and the Cine 12 Atelier Varan in Romania in 1993. He is also responsible for the Ateliers Varan in Serbia & Montenegro since 2005 of the South Caucasus since 2006.
