Yilmaz Arslan
Born in Kazanli in Turkey in 1968, Yilmaz Arslan moved to West Germany in 1975. He founded the Sommer-Winter theatre company in 1988. His first film, Langer Gang (1992), won the Best First Film prize at the San Sebastián Festival, as well as the Silver Rose at the Bergamo Festival 1992, and the following year was nominated for the German Film Awards. In 1998 he made Yara, a story about a young Turkish girl living in Germany who is suddenly taken back to her native country and held there by force. His feature films, based on his own personal experiences, deal with the problems of immigration and integration. The characters in his films suffer from a loss of cultural identity: in Yara this results in madness, in Fratricide (2005) it leads to violence
