Anthony Mann
Born Emil Anton Bundmann in San Diego, California, in 1906. Anthony Mann started out as set designer, actor and director for Broadway plays. Called by Hollywood, he directed his first films in 1942 after working as assistant director (Preston Sturges). He is soon well-known for his thrillers of great expertise and dramatic sensibility. In 1950, he starts a series of westerns which represent "the closest to perfect and that the genre has to offer". Winchester 73 (1950), Bend of the River (1952), The Naked Spur (1953), Tha Man From Laramie (1955), all of which will be engraved in the History of cinema thanks to their tragic tone, their resumption of legends, their art and interest for noble yet human characters submitted to difficult experiences. In the beginning of the 60's, he contributes to the big Hollywood productions with less conviction (El Cid, 1961; The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1964). He died in Berlin in 1967 during the shooting of A Dandy in Aspic, leaving behind over 40 films which according to Tavernier and Coursodon "deserve a pilgramage"
