Through the lives of Bouba, the video club operator, and Jules Cesar, the djembe maker and player who sees the djembe, a skin-covered hand drum, as the big brother of cinema, Jean-Marie Teno turns the portrait of the Ouagadougou neighborhood of St. Leon into an introspection on his craft as a filmmaker, as well as a personal reflection on art, popular culture, and business in Africa today.

This film received financial support from the Languedoc-Roussillon Region in partnership with the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC).

Jean-Marie Teno

Born in Cameroon, he arrives in France in 1978 to study audiovisual communication. He directs his first documentary film, Schubbah, in 1983. He quickly feels the need to produce and distribute his own films, and therefore founds Les Films du Raphia. Since then he has been alternately making documentaries and fiction films with, Afrique je te plumerai (1992), La Tête dans les nuages (1994), Clando (1996), Chef ! (1999), Vacances au pays (2000), Le Mariage d’Alex (2002), producing (Si-Gueriki, la Reine-mère, by Idrissou Mora-Kpai, 2002) and distributing (Le Passage du Milieu, by Guy Deslauriers, 1999). His latest film, Le Malentendu colonial (to be released in 2005), shows how the missionary activities of European churches in Africa tend to be one and the same with the political and economical interests of colonial power.
