Youssef Chahine
Born in 1926 in Alexandria, Youssef Chahine went to the United States to study film-making and acting at the Pasedena Play House. Two years after his return to Cairo, he makes his film-making debut with Papa Amine (1950). As of his first films, he introduces psychological, realist and social elements into melodramas and musicals. His career is then marked by several works of art (Gare centrale, 1958 ; La Terre 1969 ; Le Moineau, 1973 ; Alexandrie, pourquoi ?, 1978 ; Le Sixième jour, 1986 ; Le Destin, 1997). The Montpellier Film Festival paid tributes to him in 1982 and 1983.
