A plumber in his early fifties, a widower and childless, after witnessing the death of a man of his age, is henceforth haunted by the fear that his own days may be numbered. He gives up his job and tries to set his life in order and to enjoy what is left of it. All he meets with, however, is a series of disillusions; nothing impinges on his loneliness. Fate deceives him, leaving a bitter after-taste. More hopeless than ever, his only choice is to take up his routine work once again.
