A portrait of the Calabrian countryside, Lavoratori is a searing exploration of the peasantry's grinding existence in one of Italy's poorest regions, via the daily lives of two families, from milking sheep to labouring in the fields. "The family provides ends in the upbringing of children. But unless there is hope for them of a change of condition - and it is in the nature of such things that an improvement of social condition should represent nothing other than an exception - the sight of one's own children condemned to the selfsame existence as one's own does nothing to reduce its painful and empty burden." Tommaso Cotronei
Tommaso Contronei, born in Calabria in 1955, was very young when he started working with his parents. In 1993 he became Vittorio de Seta's assistant, after he had found in cinema a way to express himself, impregnated by In Calabria. In 1998 he directed his first film Nel blu cercando fiabe, presented at the Rome Arcipelago Cinema.
