Sergio Leone

Italian film director born in 1929. The son of the director Roberto Roberti, he started in cinema as second crew director in Hollywood co-productions such as Helen of Troy. He completed The Last Days of Pompeii, replacing Mario Bonnard who had fallen ill. In 1961 he signed the epic The Colossus of Rhodes and then started the 'dollar trilogy' in 1964 with A Fistful of Dollars, followed by For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967). His name has since been closely linked with what have been called spaghetti westerns. His aesthetic mannerism and stylised treatment reached an epitome in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Once upon a Time … the Revolution (1971) was not a success with the public and was followed by ten years of silence. Leone made his last film, Once Upon a Time in America, in 1984. It was a panorama of New York in the 1920s. He died in 1989.
